2019 Harvest crew profiles

We'll start our harvest crew profiles this year with the newest member of our crew.  Shawn is a native of Coulee Dam, currently living in Wilbur and works for the Washington State Department of Transportation.  He is an EXPERT truck driver!  The day we went out for a test drive I came home and told Reynald I was going to resign.

That didn't happen so I decided to learn from Shawn.  I have to say, just riding along in his truck that one time, taught me a lot and I think Starbucks appreciates my new found truck driving skill!

Shawn is driving Double Shot back and forth to Tokio and the most amazing skill that I think he has is that he can back up the truck and trailer.  This is something I avoid at all cost.  I'm so happy to know that if I get in to a tight spot, all I have to do is call Shawn and he will back me right out!

Welcome to the GMC crew Shawn!  We love having you aboard.....

P.S.   Shawn's in-laws own Doxie's Drive-In on the west end of the town of Wilbur.  If you're driving along on Highway 2, stop in for a great burger and fries and you might even catch Shawn flipping your burger!!

Let the Games Begin

We started our winter wheat harvest yesterday and what a day it was.  Sometimes the first day can be kind of slow, but that was not the case this year.  We hauled  22,000 bushels of grain to the grain elevator in Tokio!

I had a chance to capture a few images, but only a few as I ran the wheels off the truck!!

Dumping the first load of grain for the 2019 harvest.

And here are the two guys that open our gates, Taylor and Shawn.

I love how straight the lines are.

Here's our support team.  The only vehicle we don't want to use is the little fire truck at the end of the line!

And, the end of the first day.

Harvest is coming......

We are planning to move equipment today for a bright and early start tomorrow morning.  Humans and equipment have been waiting all week for this day!

View from the house.

Two combines and Butch the Cougar!

Starbucks and Double Shot ready for service.

Faithful Raymond is filled with fuel and ready to roll.
I forgot to take a photo of Alicia's tractor and grain cart, but it is also parked and ready to go.  There will be more images of all of us in action in the days and weeks to follow.

Pretty skies

The last few weeks have given us a quite a show, sunrise, sunset and in between!  I never get tired of looking at this.

Mayor Pete greeting the day!

The sky gets prettier and prettier in the evenings, long after the sun actually ducks below the horizon.

Getting to know you....

Last week our friends Keven and Alicia came for a visit with their now teenage kiddos.  They were here 8 years ago, which the children were quite small.  It was so much fun getting to know the kids and reconnecting with their parents.  I have so much hope for our future!!

We did a lot of things while the Snyder family was here, but I neglected to take photos, sitting down only long enough each evening to enjoy dinner and wine on the porch, watching yet another breathtaking sunset.

Cherries and more cherries

We have two sweet cherry trees and one pie cherry tree and both were loaded with fruit this year.  The first to ripen were the purple sweet cherries.  The fruit was huge and super sweet.  I think we picked five apple boxes from that tree.

Very large and very sweet purple cherries.

A closer look at the purple cherries.

Next we worked on the pie cherries.  My cousins from Portland arrived Friday afternoon and we spent ALL DAY Saturday picking and then pitting pie cherries.  They went home with 63 quarts to make in to pies, jam, cobbler, etc.  We picked about half the tree.  The birds may get the rest.  A different kind of harvest, (wheat!) is right around the corner and I need to focus on getting ready for that, so cherry harvest may be over.

This is what is facing us!

The Rainier type sweet cherry was also loaded with fruit, though it was small but sweet as candy.  I lost track of how many boxes came off that tree but there are still two full boxes in the refrigerator in the barn!  Not sure what I am going to do with those!  I've given away just about as many as I dare.  It's become kind of like zucchini!

The fruit is small buy oh so sweet!  Not sure what I will do with these.  I think I will pit them and freeze and then make some jam this winter when I have a little more time for such things.

After a long day of cherries, dinner on the porch with an amazing sunset, was a real treat.
