Accidental combination

Last night when I was walking from the shop to the house after work, this floral combination caught my eye.  Wish I could say I did it on purpose!  It's a pretty surprise.....

Can't remember the name of this rose, but the purple is heliotrope.

Finished!

We finished cutting and thrashing grain on Sunday but the warehouse wasn't open so we hauled in our last loads Monday morning.  2020 crop is in the bin!

Spring wheat

Tuesday afternoon we pulled in to our spring wheat crop which is seeded around our house and beyond.  I love it when we are working so close to home!

Paula' first harvest and she was looking the wrong way!

Though the corn is getting so tall she may have had difficulty catching all the action anyway.

Baxter!

Both dogs were happy while we were closer to home.

Rainbows

We had a rain delay yesterday morning and again in the late afternoon.  The afternoon delay resulted in the most stunning rainbows.   Here are a few photos......

and another Reynald photo

and the other end in the combine!
I was on my way back to the house and stopped at the end of Rolinco to snap a few photos.

More Harvest

Thursday and Friday of our first week of harvest were hot, hot, hot!  Temperatures were in the low 100's which is hard on equipment and humans.  Thankfully, the heat broke and Saturday was a very comfortable 85 degrees most of the day.  The coming week is supposed to be more of the same.

Alicia and Matthew attended a wedding Saturday afternoon and she turned over the grain cart driving to me.  I did this job for several years, but that was over 15 years ago!  My skills were rusty, especially when it came to loading the trucks, but I managed.  I'll be very happy to get back to my truck Monday morning.

Alicia left me a cheat sheet on proper grain cart operation!

Starbucks awaits my return.

Matthew and Alicia at the wedding in Spokane.

Physical distancing and mask wearing were observed by all.

I was very glad when the day was done!  And my reward was a gorgeous sunset.

First Day of 2020 Harvest

We started our winter wheat harvest this past Thursday July 30th.  It was a soft start, with just the three of us, me, Reynald and Alicia.  The full crew arrived the following day.  It was a good way to begin.  We could get the machinery moved and combines tested and set up.  I got my truck legs under me!

Moving the combines on Rolinco Road.

And now on Zundel road, on our way to the Walter's field.

Reynald is getting ready to dive in to the Walter's field!

And first cut!!

Faithful Starbucks will take me up and down the road to the Templin Terminal for the next few weeks.

I made wheat themed face masks for our family crew, which includes our virtual crew in Boston and Harrington!

Our Rolinco Road harvest crew.

Alicia truly is the field manager!

Dad and daughter.  This melts my heart.

Grandma Jo has been part of our harvest crew for longer than I have!  The last several years she has been our grocery runner.  This year due to Covid she will not be filling that role, but remains near the phone for frequent updates on crop yields and progress reports.

David and Roni Jo and Ryan James are supporting from afar.

This is Ryan's first harvest and he not happy that he is not here in person!
This is our third harvest since my dad died.  His spirit is so prevalent in what we do day in and day out but is especially strong during harvest and seeding.  The year that dad died, my friend Lynnie sent me this poem.  I take it out and read it on the first day of our harvest.  I shed some tears as I read it, but that's ok.  It's a good thing to miss dad and it's a good thing to remember how much he loved the life that he lived and has passed on to us.

Off we go......
